Electricity use is rising. Which meter should you check first?

Start with the measurement point, time period and operating schedule before comparing electricity use.

One bill does not show every area

A site-wide bill shows total consumption for its billing period. To investigate an increase within the site, first identify which meters cover production, utilities and individual buildings. Record the area and loads covered by each meter so that a reading has a clear location.

Compare the same period and unit

Keep energy consumption in kWh separate from power demand in kW. Check timestamps, missing readings and the period covered before comparing meters. If a submeter is included in a main meter, adding both readings would count the same electricity twice.

Look alongside operating hours

A load outside normal working hours is a point to investigate, not proof of waste. Some equipment must continue running. Compare the trend with the production schedule, building occupancy and equipment that is expected to remain on, then ask the person responsible to check the area.

What to prepare for a trial

Choose one area and prepare its meter list, a simple layout and an example report. In the Energy Monitoring Software demo, explore the overview, individual meters, trends and reports. For a multi-building application, use the Building Energy Monitoring Software demo. Device models, communication methods and access rights need review before a real connection is agreed.
