EPC service growth: design a deliverable Solar O&M offer

Engineering, procurement and construction (EPC) firms can use their knowledge of installed sites to develop solar operations and maintenance (O&M) services. Recurring revenue needs a deliverable offer: what is covered, how much work it requires and how service quality will be reviewed. Define these before treating a service fee as additional profit.

An EPC service team prepares tools and reviews planned work in a solar service workshop.

1. Define what the customer buys

PEA’s August 2026 Solar Rooftop briefing emphasized quality and installation standards. For EPC firms, continuity after handover starts with a service scope both parties understand.

  • Specify included work

Separate data review, scheduled inspections, reports and corrective-work coordination. State the agreed frequency or appointment process rather than leaving service availability undefined.

  • Identify additional work

Clarify which parts, specialist tests or out-of-scope visits require a separate proposal. Make approval steps visible before additional costs arise.

2. Cost the delivery work

NREL’s O&M guidance supports structured planning for more predictable service costs. Your estimate needs actual travel, staffing and site-access conditions.

  • Count work beyond the visit

Alongside travel and technician hours, include scheduling, document review, reporting and follow-up on unfinished jobs. Administrative effort is part of delivery.

  • Test capacity against the offer

Before accepting response commitments or more sites, review the existing queue, backup personnel and tasks that depend on specialist subcontractors.

3. Pilot and review the service package

Begin with sites where history and scope are clear. Actual delivery should show whether customers receive the agreed work at the cost assumed by the business.

  • Review service and cost together

Track completed scheduled tasks, reopened work, service hours and unplanned expenditure. Adjust the package before extending it to a larger customer base.

  • Make handovers practical

Keep site, equipment, repair history and job ownership accessible. The next coordinator should not have to rely solely on the memory of the original installer.

Frequently asked questions

Which service is a useful starting point?

Choose recurring customer work the company is ready to deliver, such as scheduled checks and reporting, with a clearly defined scope.

What should inform a price review?

Use actual hours, travel, repeat visits and external costs. Separate special charges under the service terms; total revenue is not profit.
