ISO 9001:2026 was published on 16 September 2026. Machine builders can use this occasion to review how customer issues feed back into improvement. Start with one recurring problem, an accountable owner, evidence supporting the cause and a method for checking the result. A quality management system (QMS) keeps the records available for that review.

1. Choose an issue linked to customer outcomes
ISO describes the new edition as emphasising clarity, quality culture and leadership. A practical review should therefore connect activity with the customer’s result rather than counting closed documents alone.
Define the problem
Record machine model or identifier, symptoms, timing and impact, such as repeated stops for adjustment. Separate observed facts from proposed explanations.
Assign responsibilities
Service collects field evidence, engineering reviews machine-related findings, and the process owner remains accountable for the corrective result.

2. Connect immediate correction with improvement
Siemens’ discussion of machine lifecycle data includes using field findings in future design. In practice, retain the reason for choosing an action and its implications for equipment already delivered.
Separate two stages
State what restores customer operation immediately and what addresses recurrence, such as an assembly instruction or a service procedure.
Verify before wider changes
Test the result on relevant machines and operating conditions before changing the approach for the whole model. Obtain the required approval for the change.

3. Close with a reusable result
Set the review date and effectiveness evidence before starting the action. At review, establish whether the symptom has returned and whether the change introduced a different problem.
Measure exposure to the issue
Compare recurrence against relevant operating cycles or hours. Fewer cases caused by less machine use do not establish improvement.
Bring findings to review
Summarise the action, verified results and remaining work so management can consider design, assembly or technician-training changes.
Frequently asked questions
What should be prepared for a 2026-edition review?
Prepare the process scope, current documents, performance evidence and unresolved issues. Quality staff must compare these with the actual standard; this article is not a complete list of changed requirements.
Does QMS software complete certification or transition?
Software use does not establish certification. The organisation must assess its practices and contact its certification body to plan its own transition.
