A cold store that appears full may contain usable gaps or space restricted by product requirements. Improving receiving capacity therefore starts with actual locations and unfinished tasks. A warehouse management system (WMS) provides stock and pallet history for planning. Capacity, temperature performance and safety still need an on-site assessment.

1. Distinguish empty from usable
Location codes should identify room, capacity and status. A total count of empty slots is not enough to accept additional goods.
Check storage requirements
Review temperature zone, pallet dimensions, weight, stacking and segregation against approved product conditions.
Exclude unavailable space
Identify maintenance areas, prohibited positions and held stock. Do not treat these as immediately available capacity.

2. Review partial pallets and unfinished tasks
Partial-withdrawal and movement history explain how space is being used.
Consider consolidation carefully
Combine pallets only when product and depositor rules permit it. Retain ownership, lots and relationships to the original labels.
Resolve unfinished movements
Separate completed physical moves awaiting confirmation from moves that never occurred. Check actual locations before correcting records.
3. Trial one zone before accepting more stock
Measure usable capacity alongside receipt and picking time. More pallets can make stock harder to reach.
Review measures together
Track usable locations, repeat handling, picking time and storage-rule exceptions for comparable products.
Invest against the real constraint
If room capacity or refrigeration performance remains limiting, obtain the responsible assessment before accepting more work. WMS does not itself increase refrigeration capacity.

Frequently asked questions
Which data starts a cold-store capacity review?
Use location plans, pallet size and weight limits, area status and partial-withdrawal records. Responsible staff should confirm aisle, airflow and refrigeration constraints.
Must the entire warehouse be rearranged first?
A project can start with one room or zone. Survey locations and agree reconciliation procedures before expanding coverage.
Explore cold-store location and pallet records
Bring a location plan, partial-withdrawal examples and product restrictions to assess which information can improve use of your existing space.
